In the depths of the abyss
“Det förtegna förflutna” ('The secretive and quiet past’) – the debut album of Swedish black metal duo Blodtår – is due for release on April 21, 2023. Today we present the third and final single: “I avgrundens djup” (‘In the depths of the abyss’).
Blodtår commented:
“I avgrundens djup” truly embodies the signature Blodtår sound; I consider it one of the standout tracks from “Det förtegna förflutna”. Moreover, writing a homage to the Hårga Legend - which is one of Sweden's darkest folk tales - was a tremendous honour.
The full name of the track is ‘They dance upon the mountain... in the depths of the abyss’ and it tells the tragic story of the Hårga Dance. My interpretation of the legend is based on the most captivating sources, which paint a picture of a fateful night in Hårga, Hälsingland. At a local barn dance, a mysterious fiddler appears and introduces an unheard-of music style. The youth in attendance can't resist the music's call, and they join in the dance, unable to stop themselves. The fiddler - with his burning eyes, cloven hooves, and magical music - leads them out of the barn and up the Hårga Mountain, where they eventually dance to their deaths.
Heed the voice that sings
“Lyss till den röst som sjunger” is the second single from the upcoming album of Sweden’s leading dungeon synth project, Örnatorpet. “Evigt främmande, evigt fjärran” will be released on relevant formats on May 5, 2023.
Örnatorpet is modern music without the trappings of modernity: nostalgia and longing channelling the spirit both of timeless classics like Fata Morgana, Mortiis, and Wongraven and recent genre greats such as Erang, Old Sorcery, and Vindkaldr.
Örnatorpet commented:
The title translates to something like ’Heed the voice that sings’. Unlike the first single, this track is more uplifting and hopeful; it will transport you to a world of magic and wonder. With its heavenly voices, delicate piano, and harp melodies, “Lyss till den röst som sjunger” instils a sense of serenity and calm. It's a song that reminds us to keep faith in the face of adversity and to believe in the power of the human spirit. This single showcases the album’s versatility, proving that it's not just about darkness and gloom. We also get to explore the magical and fantastical aspects of the Dark Fantasy genre, bringing to life a world that is both wondrous and captivating.
Reverence
Lustre the Swedish apotheosis of ambient black metal, returns with the new digital EP: “Reverence”.
Compared to “A Thirst for Summer Rain” (2022), the single is imbued with a far darker and more twisted feeling. Twenty minutes of pulsating, vibrant melancholia of the kind that Lustre has become known for. “Reverence” features a guest appearance by none other than J.J. from Harakiri for the sky, whose vocals bring additional layers with enhanced dynamics to Lustre’s sound.
Nachtzeit commented:
This song was initially called “Dimmans dans” (‘The dance of the fog’). I can’t recall exactly when, but it was written well over a decade ago and has since been sitting in my archives. I rediscovered the song in recent years and realised it had great potential. As I was developing and expanding upon the original version, I came across a poem by Robert Frost and thought it would be a perfect fit for the theme of this track. That’s also when I had the idea to ask J.J. if he’d like to contribute some guest vocals.
